Principal Engineer – Micro-Grid Control & Protection

NEOM Energy Sector needs candidates with hands-on experience in the design, protection, and operation of micro-grids. This includes technology selection, component sizing, grid architecture optimization, and financial calculation of the end-state of the micro-grid.

Integration of prosumers, distributed renewables, distributed storage, UPS system, and EV in the design of the micro-grid constitute a core component. Control and protection of these assets to provide grid flexibility and ancillary services is a must-know.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of NEOM’s power grid infrastructure strategic objectives and goals by implementing near, medium, and long-term solutions at the lowest costs
  • Review, simulate, validate, and implement control schemes and protection philosophies of micro-grids
  • Develop energy-management systems
  • Review micro-grid related project during the entire project life cycle
  • Help develop and implement standards, guidelines, and best practices to ensure comprehensive delivery of expert services, systems, and outcomes
  • Develop synergy with local and international organizations with involvement in design and simulation tools to keep NEOM up to date with the digital industry

Education & Experience

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience for master’s and 7 years for Ph.D. degrees
  • Micro-grids design and operation
  • Control and protection of distribution systems, micro-grids either tied-in or off-grid
  • Distributed renewable integration at the micro-grid level
  • Distributed energy storage at the micro-grid level
  • Integration of prosumers fixed and mobile in micro-grid design
  • Good knowledge of battery storage technologies
  • Good knowledge of Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) system
  • Good knowledge of converter/inverter technology and operation
  • Knowledge of financial calculation for technology selection and grid design options
  • Clear reporting and presentation skills
  • Expertise in using PSCAD or EMTPRV.
  • Expertise in using PSSE/Power Factory DIgSILENT
  • Expertise in using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
