The Sustainable Development Division within the NEOM Environment Department is searching for a dynamic and innovative sustainability professional to join the Sustainability Planning and Design Team.

This role is critical in supporting the implementation of the Sustainability Assessment and Approvals framework and function and communicating NEOM’s Environmental & Social Sustainability Performance Standards (NEOM EPS) to designers and contractors.

Job Requirements

  • The Senior Sustainability Expert – Planning supports the Senior Sustainability Manager with the implementation of sustainability-related standards and guidelines, policies and procedures, to be incorporated in the NEOM Master Plans and building designs.
  • The Senior Sustainability Expert – Planning is part of the specialist team, which is required to develop and support with the implementation of a bespoke sustainability management system (sustainability assessment scheme) for the masterplan and buildings considering all aspects of the built environment (design, construction and operation). The NEOM EPS will be specific to NEOM sustainability targets, to monitor that objectives are achieved in an effective, high quality and timely manner, which is critical to the world-class execution of NEOM sustainable development strategies.
  • The Senior Sustainability Expert – Planning undertakes the design compliance reviews of the Sustainable masterplan documentation for projects assigned to him/her and related to his/her subject matter expertise.
  • Interacts on behalf of the NEOM Environment Department, Sustainable Developments Division and proactively engages with planning teams on all built environment related sustainability issues.
  • Guides master planners, building designers and sustainability specialists regarding the sustainability compliance of the NEOM masterplans and building designs related to his/her subject matter expertise.
  • Implements sustainability guidelines, standards, assessment studies/ methodologies and documentation prepared and submitted to NEOM Environmental Department by sustainability sub-consultants.
  • Contributes to continued alignment of NEOM projects with the NEOM sustainability urban planning and building requirements as well as IFC performance standards and world’s best practice.
  • Supports the Sustainability Manager that sustainability issues are effectively implemented during the master planning, building design and construction processes.
  • Supports with Compliance Audits of contractor activities and compiles audit records and reports for NEOM Environment Department, as appropriate.
  • Provides technical support related to his/her subject matter expertise and guidance related to sustainability within NEOM and to external consultants where interface is required (e.g. developers/ consultants/ suppliers).
  • Contributes to sustainability initiatives and educational programs.

The Senior Sustainability Expert – Planning should have experience of performing environmental and sustainability planning and approvals for major infrastructure or mega-projects of international significance. In addition, the experience should ideally span the development life cycle from conceptualization, design, construction, commissioning, operations and decommissioning.

As a minimum the role will require:

  • Twelve (12) or more years’ experience across the fields of sustainability planning.
  • Professional qualification and work experience with development, and/or implementation of ‘Sustainability Rating Systems’.
  • Experience with implementing sustainability program, policies and regulatory frameworks or processes.
  • Strong technical sustainability skills across masterplan, infrastructure and building designs.
  • Strong management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
